Orcas Island: Rain or Snow!

by Leslie Patson | 3rd March 2012

We spent last Saturday and Sunday on Orcas Island and Marc’s sneezing and sniffling and strange strange weather (by that I mean we had rain, definite snowfall and then sun and bright blue sky). So we decided to drive around a bit and got to see some things we normally might have missed otherwise – like this sign for the Whalestooth Farm. Unfortunately Google did not tell me anything about what happens on this farm but I still think the sign is cool. We had 3 meals on Orcas – 2 great and one not so great. Brunch at Doe Bay with their delicious Blood Orange Mimosas (thank you Elizabeth Hansen!) – excellent – and breakfast at the New Leaf – always great. When we discovered that the restaurant at our hotel – Inn at Ship Bay was closed for low season and our other dinner choice the New Leaf was closed for a wedding with not too many other options we chose the restaurant at the Rosario Resort also in Eastsound. Darn, what a bad choice – super mediocre. Good service, ok atmosphere but no where near the level of food you find at these other restaurants on Orcas. It’s good to know where to go and where not to go, right? While we waited for the ferry we walked around and came across this beautiful sign. I also noticed that unfortunately the cute little antique store by the ferry landing went out of business – I hate it when small, cute stores can’t make it. When we woke up Sunday morning the sky was blue and the sun was out. By about 8:30 snow filled the sky. The fluffy and light flakes were soon replaced by millions of pellets of little white confetti. We later heard there was a “white out” on the other side of the island. By the end of breakfast all signs of snow had already disappered and this is what the ferry ride home looked like – not too shabby! If you look closely out the window of the ferry you’ll see another ferry passing by. The ferry schedule is precarious – not too many options to plan your day around and you never know how crowded they’re going to be. Still, one of my favorite parts of the trip where you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Very cozy!
